Secondupdate.com – Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a film from DC Studios, is currently in production. Recently, a leaked video surfaced online showing the construction of a large-scale movie set.
The set appears to depict a classic American town, which is believed to play a significant role in the film's main storyline.
The movie stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, and is directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. It is adapted from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series by writer Tom King and illustrator Bilquis Evely, which was released between 2021 and 2022.
Reportedly, the leaked footage suggests that the film will introduce new elements that significantly differ from previous DC films. This has sparked speculation that the narrative in the new DC Universe (under James Gunn and Peter Safran) will be built with a fresh, distinct approach.
In the comic version, Kara Zor-El is portrayed differently from the Supergirl we typically know. On her 21st birthday, she feels lost and finds herself on a distant alien planet. There, she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl seeking revenge on Krem of the Yellow Hills, a mercenary who murdered her father and stole her family’s heirloom sword.
Kara agrees to help Ruthye. Together, with Krypto the Superdog, they embark on an intergalactic journey to track down Krem. The story focuses on space adventures, stepping out of Superman’s shadow.
James Gunn, the lead producer at DC Studios, has confirmed that the Supergirl in this film is vastly different. According to him, Kara witnessed immense death and violence during her 14 years on her home planet before arriving on Earth.
As a result, she has grown into a much tougher and more ‘hardcore’ character than the usual Supergirl portrayal.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently filming and is scheduled for theatrical release on June 26, 2026.
