Robert Downey Jr. Returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Two Upcoming Avengers Films

Secondupdate.com - Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but not as Iron Man.

This time, he will portray the iconic Fantastic Four villain, Doctor Doom (Victor Von Doom), in two upcoming Marvel films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday (March 5), Downey is deeply committed to preparing for the role of Doctor Doom. This was revealed by Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of the last two Avengers films, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

"The character development process is very intense. He (Robert Downey Jr.) is deeply immersed in it and incredibly focused," said Joe.

Joe also mentioned that Downey is personally involved in shaping the character, including backstory development and costume design.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 by announcing that Downey would return to the MCU, but this time as the main villain, no longer as Iron Man.

During the event, Downey appeared on stage at Hall H wearing a mask and cloak alongside a group of other actors. He greeted fans and said:

"New mask, same mission. What did I tell you? I love playing complex characters," he said while appearing on the panel stage at Hall H, San Diego Convention Center.

Many fans previously believed that Downey's journey in the MCU had ended after his character, Tony Stark/Iron Man, sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame (2019). However, he is now returning in a completely different role.

Doctor Doom is not a new character in Marvel films. He has previously been portrayed by:

Julian McMahon in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

Toby Kebbell in Fantastic Four (2015, which flopped at the box office)

In the Infinity Saga, the MCU focused on Thanos (Josh Brolin) as the primary villain. Now, in the Multiverse Saga, Doctor Doom will be the greatest threat the Avengers must face.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars will follow in May 2027.
