Secondupdate.com – The third film in the Avatar franchise, titled Fire and Ash, has been confirmed to have a longer runtime than its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), which lasted three hours and 12 minutes.

Director James Cameron revealed in Empire magazine that while developing The Way of Water, he and his team of writers had too much story material. As a result, parts of the narrative originally planned for the second film had to be moved to its sequel, Fire and Ash.

"In short, we had too many great ideas packed into the first act of film 2," Cameron said, as quoted in Variety's report on Saturday (Sept. 8).

According to him, The Way of Water had a very fast-paced storyline, leaving little room to explore the characters.

"That film moves like a bullet train, and we didn't delve deeply enough into the characters. So I said, 'Guys, we need to split this up.'" For that reason, Cameron teased, "Film 3 will actually be a bit longer than Film 2."

Cameron first revealed the title Fire and Ash at the D23 event in August 2024.

Although no footage was shown, he shared several concept artworks, including an image of a massive airship, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) riding a banshee, and the Ash People of the Na'vi dancing around a large fire.

He also mentioned that Fire and Ash would be an extraordinary adventure with stunning visual elements, but it would also bring greater emotional intensity than the previous film.

Several actors from the first two Avatar films will return in Fire and Ash, including:

  1. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña,
  2. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis,
  3. Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass,
  4. Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, and Dileep Rao.

Additionally, some new faces will join, such as Oona Chaplin, who plays the leader of the Ash People, and David Thewlis.

The plot of the film remains a secret, but Fire and Ash will continue the story following the events of The Way of Water.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 19, 2025.
